No perfect version
There is no finished, perfect version of me. I find that thought freeing, not frightening.
On the first page of this website there are five lines about me. One of them says: “No perfect version. No finished story.”
I wrote it for myself as much as for anyone who reads it.
Imperfect by nature
Many of us carry a picture of a better version of ourselves. More organised, more successful, calmer, finished. We measure today against that picture, and today always loses.
I don't think that picture is real. There is no moment when you arrive and the work on yourself is done. You keep changing, because life keeps changing.
Curious by default
What helps me is curiosity. When something goes wrong, I try to ask “what is this teaching me?” before I ask “what is wrong with me?”. A mistake becomes information, not a judgement.
I build many things. Some are live. Some are just starting. All of them are still growing. I try to look at myself the same way.
Figuring it out as I go
This is not an excuse to stop trying. It is a reason to be kind while you try. To yourself and to the people around you, who are also figuring it out as they go.
The story is still being written. It always will be. I find that a good thing.
